Can ADHD Medication Help Cut Crime?

Researchers definitely think that criminal behavior in adults with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) decreases with the proper medications.

A recent British and Swedish study monitored the behavior of approximately 25,000 ADHD patients and discovered that those taking impulse-control stimulant drugs, like Ritalin, committed less crime compared to those not taking any medications.

This research supports previous international studies that show up to two-thirds of young offenders and half of those in adult prison have adult ADHD or have had childhood ADHD at some point in their lives.

With the instance of crimes being committed cut by about one third or lower, these findings show that encouraging ADHD patients to stay on their medication could do a lot to cut overall crime rates.
